VDCT02: From Racquetball to Renovation: The Making of UNLV's New Data Center
Presented by:
Cam M. Johnson, Manager, O.I.T. Operations Center, U.N.L.V.
Creativity and patience were key in completing the recent data center remodel for the Office of Information Technology at the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV). The project lasted six years and included more twists and turns than a John Grisham novel. Over those six years, nearly every possible on-campus location was scouted as the potential data center home: even the old racquetball courts were considered. Hot-aisle containment was favored over traditional raised floor cooling and a dedicated end of row network zone was picked over a top of rack solution. This presentation will analyze the rationale used and the lessons learned over the course of this painfully long, but successful project.
